Book Box Project
uds

The Book Box project is an outreach programme of the UDS Library Service (to extend library services beyond the walls of the library). It was initiated in 2007 as a means to avail reading materials to students to boost their performance and reading habits. Whereas government aided schools in Uganda are supported with books and other reading materials, private schools have to fend for themselves. Books and establishment of libraries is at the bottom of their priority list because of the more pressing needs like building classrooms and ensuring that teachers are recruited and paid. This in turn leaves a gap for reference and reading materials.

The objectives of the UDS book box project is to ensure that pupils and teachers in private secondary schools in remote areas gain access to books on the curricula and other suitable reading materials and to create a reading environment that will lead to the nurturing of a reading culture.

The project targets remote area private secondary schools and involves the selection, acquisition and processing of a range of between fifty and one hundred books suitable for all levels within the secondary school. The books range from science to arts subject books and are aimed at all pupils and teachers in a school. The boxes are sent to the schools at the beginning of each term.

Bookbox story
It’s been a pleasure to here the successes of the books UDS is providing to secondary schools through the book box project. A number has been said, it’s evident the book box has been so imperative to the schools and the communities at large, the head teacher of Immaculate Heart of Mary Nakabugu one of the beneficiary school narrated his success through the provision of UDS books.  This school has been in existence since 2004, it has got UDS books in 2013. Through the use of the books by both teachers and students, the school managed to produce the best candidate in Luuka District with a first grade with (14 points) obtained in ten papers at ordinary level, because of her successful currier; she managed to get a scholarship at St. Josephs Naggalama doing Biology, Chemistry and Math’s at her A ‘level, Muwanguzi Brian doing Physics, Economics and Mathematics at Seta High School among others. In addition to the above, the school produced a number of students, for example, Maureen has gone for a medical course at Jinja School of Health Sciences. Twelve students were also admitted on government in Technical Institutions among others. All this is through the provision of books by UDS. The school therefore wishes to extend its sincere thanks to the management of UDS for the provision of the books
