Global Hand washing day campaign for the first time in Uganda and In Kamuli District.

The president and the Speaker plus UDS and other projects participated in the Global hand washing day campaign , for the first time in Uganda and in Kamuli District..It was an event that advocates for good sanitation more especially washing hands and how to wash hands. The president advised to put more emphases on training young people especially children on how to wash and why they should wash because doctors proved it that 47% of diseases are prevented by washing hands but he also stated that doctors and nurses are silent, they don't talk the truth, they don't sensitize people with true information.. So people are sick because of ignorance. So he advised doctors and nurses to put more efforts in sensitizing people. He stated that hand washing is not only when one is going to eat but to keep clean and wash both hands properly with soap. The chairman National Water Committee said that this program started in 2006 and its in line with the National Development plan. He noted that reports show that there over 105000 water point sources and their 60000 villages in rural but few of these access water so to achieve a health community there' s need of more water. This makes UDS one of the community organisations that has continue to contribute hand washing through its wash program that sensitize, advocate use of clean water and constructing safe water reserves like water tanks/jars.

Ngobi Moses' story about the skills he acquired.

I joined UDS since 29th/Feb/2014.since that time I have been studying computer and it has shown me that really UDS is a place of computer training because of the facilities available and the well delivered services done by concerned people and generally the director who managed to provide us with the computers which are enough where by every student accesses a computer during the training time. I came to UDS while I really knew nothing concerning a computer but so far I have studied the two packages which include (introduction and Microsoft word). Basing on this knowledge I have acquired I can now manage to do the following with the computer, starting and shutting down a computer, Print the work after typing, drawing tables, diagrams because of the necessary skills I have acquired. I can also manage to use a computer as my storage device by storing important information with in a computer. So with the above acquired skills and knowledge, I am going to use it in my future studies and job. Written by Ngobi Moses

How a local journalist benefited from UDS internet.

A local journalist had this to say about UDS internet café, He says “I used to struggle to send news reports to Jinja. Before UDS introduced internet in 2006, the only means I had was through taxi drivers. This method besides being expensive, sometimes stories would reach late and worst drivers would forget and in such an event they would even get lost. Since the introduction of UDS internet cafe in Kamuli, I have benefited alot as a journalist: My work was made so easy yet at reduced the cost, the news reports now reach in time. In addition to this I received sound edit skills from UDS and this has greatly improved my news reports because am able to send voice news reports through internet.

The story of Wotali Pirusuka.

Ms Wotali Pirusuka has been a member of UDS since 2011. Apart from the farmers project, she has also been part of the WASH project. From the UDS training she learnt the use of having atip tap, a rubbish pit, a plate stand, a well constructed toilet a bathroom among others. After the training, she made sure she acquires a tip tap and also encouraged her elder sons to work and dig up the rubbish pit. She also hired labour to help her dig up a new latrine for her family because the old one was not serving her well. With the help of her family members, they also managed to construct a plate stand to avoid washing plates while putting them down. Recently government health officials were carrying their inspections, while most of her neighbors where running away from them, she stayed comfortably at home because she knew she had all the requirements they were looking for. She therefore thanks UDS for giving her timely training which has benefitted her and her house hold.

Library Story

UDS library has been rated as one of the best libraries in Kamuli, it’s good to wait for other to praise your work before you praise yourself. UDS has been offering the services to the community through the provision of books for quite a while; we have come to realize its importance through the focus group discussion conducted a few weeks ago. The members in attendance were in position to narrate stories about the UDS library. Isabirye Kenneth is one of the oldest members who has so far used and appreciated the library; he has been using the library since 2004. He managed to pass excellently at all levels of education and he later joined Makerere University for a course in Human Resource Management. After spending some years working, he went back and he’s now doing a course in Accounting from Kampala University. For all the time, UDS has been his only place for doing research. This is because he is in position to get access to the books unlike other libraries that had tried to operate without relevant books. According to Mr. Tigawalana one of the beneficiaries who attended the discussion, he praised UDS for the provision of a conducive space for reading, because of the space and the books, very many students come and use the facility for preps and research. He gives thanks to UDS for the provision of the services.

Rose in charge of reading from bezzallel primary school

I congratulate the management of UDS for the good work they had done at our school, we have been for long facing a challenge with reading materials at lower levels. Since we were given books last year, we have seen a tremendous change in our pupils. They can now read and write in English. Apart from that they also have also developed the habit of reading at their own. This has never happened before, pupils are now self driven, and we no longer force them to read during their free time. This is a clear indicator that the reading has improved at our school. Pupils have developed confidence in the use of English at school. I thank UDS for that vision.

Smokeless oven story.

Kakuwa Katrine located in Bulike- Ntaigirwa Parish – Her stove was constructed in December 2013 and started using it in February 2014. In her words she says “the stove is very good, it uses very little firewood, the kitchen is smoke free because all the smoke is driven out through a well built chimney, and 2 pots can be cooked at the same time besides I don’t need to tame the fire- thank you UDS for helping me and my community for bringing to us such a technology”
